Our last spin around the Sun was a wild cosmic rollercoaster ride of emotional highs and lows. 2023 promises just as much growth and change, but this time, we’re more than ready to greet all possible futures. Let the sunshine in -- it’s the dawn of a promising new year! With Pluto moving into Aquarius for the first time since 1798, “future” is indeed the operative word.
A slow start with two retrogrades
As the year begins, it may feel like we’re headed in the wrong direction, since both Mars and Mercury will still be retrograde until January 12 and 18 respectively. It can feel like a sigh of relief once they start to move in the right direction again, especially after such a messy end to 2022. We might not be ready to write our New Year’s resolutions until February, and that’s more than okay. In fact, using this time-out to reflect and integrate all the new changes in our lives might be the best use of our time.
The big news: three outer planets are moving forward
Three outer planets -- Saturn, Pluto, and Jupiter -- all switch signs this year, setting us up for some personal, cultural, and political shifts. While these transitions can lead to uncertainty in our lives, they can also help us find more solid ground. Uranus in Taurus has been in a drawn-out dispute with Saturn in Aquarius over the last few years, but as this comes to an end, there’s hope of finding stability in our economies and bank accounts.
Put down the anchor as Saturn enters Pisces on March 7
Conservative Saturn dives into the deep waters of Pisces on March 7 and will stay there for the next three years. This shift might persuade us to seek the comfort of our bathtub over a swimming pool. As our boundaries slowly melt and we find more compassion and empathy for others, fears of uncertainty could cause us to buck up with intense resistance. We’ll have to ask ourselves: which of our walls are effective, and which ones hold us back from connection?
There’s been a collective curiosity in spirituality that’s blossomed in recent years thanks to Neptune in Pisces, but we could experience a Saturnian slowdown in this regard. While some people may actively dismiss metaphysical concepts or even try to debunk astrology, other prominent voices in the spiritual arts will likely emerge. Saturn hasn’t visited this creative sign for 30 years, so we may be in for some significant art straight from the heart. Listen up for musicians who seem to channel our collective cultural moment as if they’re downloading it directly from the cosmos.
Pluto’s entrance to Aquarius on March 23 signals the end of history as we know it
Provocative Pluto’s last dance in Capricorn has been shaking the whole world to its core, and every living thing has felt the tremors. This long transit has been slowly breaking down all the structures around us that don’t work any longer. This long, earth-shattering era has been like a long tunnel since 2008, and we’ll start to see the light at the end of it as Pluto moves into Aquarius on March 23. It’s time to build stronger foundations based on truth and integrity.
Over the next couple of years, Pluto will retrograde back and forth between Aquarius and Capricorn multiple times before it stays put in Aquarius from the end of 2024 all the way into 2043. This year, though, we get to see a sneak preview of whether humanity is up to the task of joining hands in peace and building a more benevolent world for all. Will this mark the beginning of the infamous Age of Aquarius?
The next few years could feel like the end of history all over again as we witness massive shifts around social justice, community, and technology. We’re entering an era of potential technocracy, so we must be careful we’re not trading the autocratic and corporate rulers of the last decade for even more dangerous AI replacements. It might be wise to schedule regular social media fasts just to make sure we don’t become robots ourselves.
Bless this mess as Jupiter enters Taurus on May 16
When Jupiter leaves fiery Aries for grounded Taurus on May 16, we can trade in our need for speed for something a little more practical. This is the year to focus on expanding the abundance in our lives. Whether we put some extra cash in our savings accounts or buy that house we’ve been dreaming of, the rewards could be generous.
Jupiter may also remind us that the body truly does keep the score. Trauma can continue to rise to the surface so that we can heal and expand into a larger container. Our bodies are our sanctuaries, so use this time to treat yourself to a massage or a healthy dinner and accept the blessings that come from the planet of good fortune.
A deep rumbling beneath our feet may occur around May 17 when Jupiter in Taurus squares Pluto in Aquarius. We could see shifts in the climate greatly impact our communities, or inflation and financial instability might shake things up. But when Jupiter joins the North Node on June 1, we can find some much-needed hope for a stable financial future (after the dust has a chance to settle, of course).
Venus Retrograde on July 22 wants us to love each other more
Summer lovin’ may not be as hot as we’d like it to be. Love goddess Venus takes a step back on July 22 and goes retrograde in Leo, inspiring some reflection about how we give and receive affection. We all just want to be adored and accepted for our unique expression. We might revisit relationship challenges that came up for us the last time Venus retreated in this sign eight years ago. What has changed since then?
Eclipse season reveals our true colors
This might be the year we come out of hiding from our quarantine lairs. The first eclipse of the season shines a light on who we are. This potent Total Solar Eclipse in Aries on April 20 wants us to quit caring so much about what others think, but in order to do so, we may still have some skin to shed. That’s where the Penumbral Lunar Eclipse in Scorpio on May 5 comes in handy.
The more we let go, the more we get to know what’s really important to us. Later in the year, the eclipses will illuminate our true values. October 14 delivers an Annular Solar Eclipse in Libra, followed by a Partial Lunar Eclipse on October 28 in Taurus. Both eclipses are ruled by Venus, highlighting that which brings beauty and meaning into our lives.
A Mercury Retrograde grand finale on December 13
2023 ends just as it began with a Mercury Retrograde in Capricorn on December 13, backing up into Sagittarius. We’re reminded that after a year of transformation, overstimulation, and planetary gyration, we all deserve a break. With so much change happening these days, we need time for our brains to integrate it all. If you get stuck at the airport or your holiday plans get rearranged, use the opportunity to recalibrate and reflect on what you want to take with you into the new era of 2024.
These are the energies everyone is working with in 2023. Curious about your unique astrology for the year ahead?
