Stay on the Straight and Narrow in Somber September

September starts on a sober note when the Sun in pristine Virgo joins strict Saturn on the 3rd. The annual conjunction of the star of our solar system with the ringed planet is a time for taking stock, a moment to pause, measure, calculate and plan. While it may feel heavy to some as Saturn can burden us with doubt, duty and responsibilities, it is an ideal day to get real and lay the foundation for future success born of a commitment made now.

Happily, encouragement is also present as the Sun forms a harmonious 120-degree trine with expansive Jupiter on September 4, linking this lucky planet's grand vision with the practical presence of Saturn. The alignment of the Sun, Jupiter and Saturn is perfect for organization and strategy, especially related to career since all three planets are in practical and productive earth signs. The ability to look ahead with hope (Jupiter's great gift) is also growing as the giant planet is nearing the end of its four-month retrograde cycle. This period of backward motion put a damper on optimism, but is now coming back -- along with the will and wherewithal to make hopes real. Collectively, these patterns favorably reflect the possibility of recognizing economic realities and moving toward rebuilding infrastructure as part of a long-range redevelopment plan. It's critical, though, that we maintain a sense of proportion and avoid promising too much or overshooting our targets when active Mars forms a stressful 90-degree square with Jupiter on September 7.

The Full Moon on September 15 falls in the normally peaceful sign of Pisces, where sensitivity, compassion and imagination rule. This month, however, wild and crazy Uranus, the planet of invention and rebellion, is joined with the Full Moon to spike Pisces emotion with spicy surprises. We may be tempted to radically change our lives as impulsiveness overcomes common sense. Fresh ideas are sparked -- they may be brilliantly unrealistic or simply weird. Sudden changes provoked by this explosive lunation include the fall of authority figures, major accidents or geological upheaval. On an individual level, the challenge is to awaken to a new reality without rushing into it or running away from it. Genius ideas need to be cultivated as carefully as ordinary ones.

Get a Big Picture Forecast so you'll be ready for your best year yet! Based on your personal birth chart, it points out important turning points in the coming year.

The Sun's entry into gracious Libra on September 22 is the equinox (fall in France, spring in the Falklands), marking a change of seasons and new social alliances. Yet the cool objectivity of this sign is contrasted by magnetic Venus' entry into sensual Scorpio, increasing intensity in relationships as deeper desires can trigger change. Mental Mercury's backward turn on September 24 signals a three-week slowdown and a time to review and revise, rather than to rush ahead. The Libra New Moon on the 29th, however, is a signal to find balance between racing forward and regressing back to the past. Grace is the gift of this Venus-ruled sign, which reminds us that with harmony and a sense of fair play, it is possible to build bridges between our conflicting drives and between one another.
