About Us: Tarot.com's Environmental Outlook

Tarot.com strives to help our users attain deeper self-knowledge and self-empowerment, and this goal influences our environmental outlook. After all, with a deeper self-knowledge comes an awareness of one's impact on others and on the environment ... and few things are more empowering than altering one's daily living habits for personal well-being and for the greater good.

As a company, we promote and encourage the little things employees can do to make a big difference. Many of these actions are so simple that they often go unnoticed! For example, our office lights are motion-sensitive, so they shut off when no one is in the room, and our temperature control system remains fairly close to the outside temperature ... wearing sweaters and scarves goes a long way in the winter, and everyone is happy to wear shorts, t-shirts and flip-flops in the summer! You won't find paper cups at our water coolers or plastic silverware in our lunchroom, and we make sure to recycle even items that aren't picked up by our local recycling program.

We also have a corporate goal of donating over 175 hours of employee time to local non-profit organizations -- many of which are geared toward enviro-friendly initiatives. We want our employees to get away from their computers and out into the world to keep their eco-calibration intact!

Then there's our business model: our key products are online readings and reports, and we give our users a free online journal in which to store them, saving countless pages of paper per year that might otherwise be used for printing.

Of course, a whole is greater than the sum of its parts. For as much as we do to support sustainability as a company, it is the individual actions of our employees that truly set us apart.

Transportation: Some of us bike to work, some of us walk. Paul O'Brien our founder and visionary drives one of the first hybrid vehicles! Many others drive hybrids, bio-fuel vehicles or PZEVs (partial-to-zero-emissions vehicles). One bold pioneer of the motorways even commutes via an 80-mpg scooter.

Energy Conservation: In June of 2008, all of 30+ web servers will be running exclusively off recycled power! At home, many of use energy-efficient appliances, long-lasting light bulbs, conservatively adjusted thermostats (where do you think we got the idea to do so at the office?) and energy-saving insulation practices.

Food Purchases: Some of our employees prefer to buy their food in bulk, so they end up throwing out less packaging material. Re-usable grocery bags are a common a sight in the lunch room, while fast-food bags are almost never encountered. Many of us grow our own herbs and veggies at home, and Portland's excellent growing climate, the prevalence of farmer's markets and the high quality of its grocery stores allow us to purchase organically grown produce that doesn't have to travel far (and therefore doesn't produce much in the way of carbon emissions) before it gets to our plates.

Reduce, Reuse and Recycle: The title says it all. Whether it's buying vintage clothes, using paperless billing to reduce paper in the mail or removing ourselves from junkmail lists with free services like Catalog Choice, we do our best to keep our landfill contributions to a minimum.

The list goes on. Donate to environmental charities? Check. Consciously support local businesses? Check. Use only environmentally-friendly cleaning and self-care products? Check.

But our efforts don't stop there. Like everyone else, we can do more, and we are using this Earth Day to reset our eco-goals for 2008. We hope to continue to build both our corporate culture and our personal practices to further support the environment. Keep an eye on this page and on your inbox for more ways to help us reduce our environmental impact and maximize our eco-karma -- the ultimate renewable energy.
