Tarot and Astrology
Tarot and Astrology are two forms of divination that deal with understanding and explaining the same underlying forces of the universe. There is an intricate web of intimate relationships and correspondences between Tarot and Astrology.
There are twenty-two spiritually archetypal cards in Tarot, called the Major Arcana, and four suits of more ordinary cards, making a total of seventy-eight cards in all. These "ordinary" cards referred to as the Minor Arcana can be further broken down into "royalty" and "numeric." In astrology, there are 4 elements relating to the 4 seasons, 12 zodiac signs mapping out the earth's sky and 9 planets revolving around the earth.
How Tarot and Astrology Relate
- Tarot Suits & Astrological Elements: Each suit represents one of the four elements, the same 4 that astrology refers to -- air, fire, water, earth.
- Major Arcana & Astrological Influences: Traditionally, each of the 22 major arcana cards in the tarot deck referenced an astrological sign, element or planet.
Although the methods of Tarot and Astrology are different, each method involves a synchronicity -- or "meaningful coincidence" -- that contributes mystical symbols to one's grasp of a situation. When you do a Tarot reading, it is fun to think about the planetary and sign symbolism inherent in the meanings of the cards.
